Abstract

Teacher shortages are an ongoing concern for the system of education, especially in high-needs schools. Methods have not been able to attract, develop, and retain teachers. High turnover has led to a decline in standards for teacher development and short-term incentives that primarily focus on recruitment. The COVID-19, global pandemic, and current political climate have worsened the existing teacher shortage, as we see ineffective methods recycled. The curent factory model of education does not support the liberation of Students of Color, nor creates a professional environment that retains educators. Including teachers in decision-making and investing in their professional capital will show that they are valued, which will build retention and foster environments for Students of Color to thrive.
