Changing Teacher’s Data Driven Approaches: The DELP- Mixed-Methods Analysis

Fri, April 10, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown, Floor: 5th Floor, Los Feliz

Abstract

Teachers make daily attempts to interpret their students’ mathematical data to increase student understanding, yet identifying the deficits proves difficult. The Data Error Literacy Protocol (DELP) in conjunction with professional development, is a step-by step process developed to assist teachers in identifying student errors and misconceptions. A 32-week mixed-methods study analyzed 3rd through 5th grade teachers’ perceptions (N=9) and application of the DELP. Findings from the study revealed teachers' viewpoints changed, ultimately improving their understanding of DELP that directly impacted their discovery of student misconceptions and errors. Additionally, the DELP reinforces Professional Learning Communities (PLC) and Multitiered Systems of Support (MTSS) that allows teachers to make informed data decisions regarding mathematics interventions.
