Grow-your-own teacher initiatives recruit and prepare community and school members to become certified educators (Author et al, 2018). This research study investigates how a local community-based grow your own program, as an intervention designed to remove barriers that community teachers face in the teaching profession, develops and supports effective teachers. In order to investigate program impact, participants’ perceptions of their readiness to teach, the supports and barriers they encounter, their evolving sense of belonging and professional efficacy, and student outcomes are explored, and collectively, highlight the importance of programs intentionally tailoring their designs to meet the needs of teacher learners.
