Abstract

This pilot study examines how teachers can design language lessons that leverage AI tools, such as ChatGPT and ELSA, as instructional scaffolds for secondary English Language Development (ELD) students. Grounded in Cognitive Load Theory, the study explored how AI can act as a cognitive scaffold to support oral presentation skills by shifting the cognitive effort from script writing to expressive delivery, including pacing, intonation, and gestures. Students in three ELD levels completed two units—one using traditional instruction and one with AI integration. Video observations showed improved delivery in eye contact, gestures, and cohesiveness. Student reflections noted increased confidence, preparation efficiency, and metacognitive awareness. Findings highlight the potential of teacher-facilitated AI integration to personalize instruction and enhance expressive language development.
