Abstract

Transitioning from undergraduate or master’s programs to PhD can be daunting, especially for students who lack adequate social, cultural, navigational, inspirational, and economic capitals for graduate school applications. This study discusses a program designed to ameliorate this challenge. This program is a targeted intervention designed to equip prospective PhD students with the competencies and skills needed to navigate the graduate school application process. This study evaluates the effectiveness and perceived impact of the program using post-program survey data collected from multiple cohorts. Analysis of the quantitative and open-ended responses reveals that participants experience significant gains in their understanding and knowledge of application components, funding, and fellowship opportunities. This improves their chance of preparing and submitting top-notch application materials.
