Black Feminist Poetic Artful Inquiry as Critical Qualitative Research

Abstract

I highlight the theoretical, critical, and poetic foundations of “Black feminist poetic artful inquiry” (Cutts, 2025) by exploring the work of Black women creatives, poets, storytellers, and researchers. I conceptualize BFPA and outline what it does and makes possible in/with/for qualitative methodologies. I also present a poetic offering that highlights how a BFPA lens informs my research and lived experiences. Finally, I present a working timeline of Black women’s contributions to qualitative research and encourage qualitative research scholars to identify and promote Black women’s liberatory work as models for in/with/for qualitative methodologies.
