Abstract

Leadership, management, and professionalism are key aspects of professional practice for anesthesiologists. It is important that these concepts are introduced and developed at the residency level. However, there are no widely adopted definitions of these concepts in anesthesiology and the relationships among all three concepts are not clearly elaborated. This study utilizes a qualitative, phenomenological theming analysis method on focus group discussions of anesthesiology leaders to explore and define critical aspects of leadership, management, and professionalism in anesthesiology. The results highlight several overarching themes for each concept. There were also overlaps among the three concepts, although the themes varied in prominence. Both the methodology and results have implications for medical specialties looking at defining aspects of professional practice.
