Abstract

This multi-case study explores the experiences of Latinx diaspora youth in Spanish secondary schools and the perceptions of Spanish preservice teachers learning to support immigrant students. It examines how transnational youth navigate cultural and linguistic barriers and construct a sense of “diasporic belonging” amid feelings of being “ni de aquí, ni de allá” (“not from here, not from there”). Data from preservice teachers reveal wide variation in their understanding of these challenges, with some expressing uncertainty—“No sé cómo ayudarles realmente” (“I don’t really know how to help them”). This study invites educators to rethink Latinidad beyond the Americas and consider how schools and teacher preparation programs can better support the belonging and academic success of transborder students.
