Abstract

Photovoice is an arts-based photographic method often embedded in participatory research. Employing photovoice enables a more comprehensive picture to be painted as it examines and addresses the research phenomena under study. This paper examines and addresses the necessity of employing photovoice for and with Black communities specific to education. Further, this paper unpacks how photovoice serves as a tool to combat deficit narratives while centering critical and asset-based perspectives from the individuals whose daily lives are impacted by the research phenomena, specifically urban Black women teachers and rural Black students.
