Abstract

This study explores the race frames (Warikoo & de Novais, 2015), “lenses through which individuals understand the role of race in society” (p. 860), held by pre-service and novice teachers of color who attend/attended a Hispanic Serving Institution in the US. Findings showed that all participants held a connection and asset-based frame, in which they articulated at least one of the following: 1) a pride in their racial identity, 2) a strong or growing connection to their racial identity, or 3) an asset-based view of their racial identity. Findings also showed that only around half of the participants hold race frames that view race as a construct connected to power and worthy of further study. Implications for practice are discussed.
