Abstract

This paper proposes a methodological extension of narrative inquiry and autoethnography, grounded in Dewey’s (1938) theory of experience. It conceptualizes the mutual constitution of individuals and their experienced worlds as an ongoing, reciprocal interaction. Drawing on illustrative cases from Canagarajah (2012) and Liu and Xu (2011), the paper examines how each method uniquely contributes to understanding identity formation in sociocultural contexts. The proposed extension maintains the distinct contributions of each approach while encouraging them to inform and enrich one another. In doing so, it aims to offer a more inclusive and context-responsive framework for connecting personal narratives with broader sociocultural dynamics in qualitative inquiry.
