Abstract

In this historical study, we explore the impact of desegregation on Atlanta area schools, in general, and more specifically consider the impact on teachers and students at Lakeside High School, which is part of DeKalb County Schools (DCS); DeKalb County is adjacent to the city of Atlanta and is one of 3 metropolitan counties with a majority black population. In our historical research, we found a legacy of racial friction that continues to reverberate in the current school climate at Lakeside High School in large part due to a 23-year court battle to desegregate the school. We focus on the impact of the Majority-to-Minority (M-to-M) program which was part of an effort to desegregate DCS schools.
