Queer(ing) time as nonviolence (wit)hnessing

Wed, April 8, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Ground Floor, Gold 2

Abstract

The proposal critiques traditional interview methods—structured, unstructured, and semi-structured—arguing that they can be violent by excluding non-normative narratives. Through the lens of queer time and assemblage immanence, the paper proposes a new methodology called "queer(ing) time" for "nonviolent withnessing." The term "queer(ing)" emphasizes that queerness is not merely a state of being, but an active, performative process (ontology and epistemology). This approach moves beyond emotion to focus on affect and a "response-able" way of engaging with data. By embracing "queer(ing) interviews," qualitative researchers can open up multiple possibilities and hopes, creating a more ethical and inclusive research practice.
