Developing and Validating a Practitioner Toolkit to Support Collaborative Data Inquiry

Fri, April 10, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown, Floor: 5th Floor, Los Feliz

Abstract

Data inquiry is a collaborative process designed to support improvements in instructional practice. However, instructional leaders have long observed that collaborative data inquiry appears to be more productive in some teams than in others. This paper describes the process for validating a practitioner toolkit, consisting of an observation rubric and a meeting exit ticket survey, which educators can use to assess how teams are engaging in collaborative data inquiry. The study team assessed feasibility and validity of the instruments through expert review, cognitive interviewing, and pilot testing in two large school districts in the northeast United States. This paper contributes to the field’s understanding of the characteristics and behaviors of effective teams as they engage in collaborative data inquiry.
