Teaching the unthinkable: Using digital media to improve student understanding of nuclear weapons history

Fri, April 10, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

This study evaluated digital media resources for teaching high school students about nuclear weapons history and policy. A mixed-methods randomized controlled trial with over 300 participants assessed pre-existing knowledge, resource perceptions, and learning gains. Findings showed students typically have limited prior knowledge beyond the early Cold War period. However, exposure to digital media resources on nuclear weapons significantly improved their understanding. Teachers and students viewed the resources positively, noting their ability to expand curriculum and their interactivity. The study provides causal evidence that digital media can effectively enhance social studies knowledge, emphasizing the need for more instruction on modern nuclear policy to help students analyze current nuclear events.
