Abstract

The current educational system poses considerable inequities for Black and Latino boys, particularly so in a changing climate that creates structural and ideological challenges for marginalized groups. Critical consciousness is a developmental framework that helps students of color navigate structural inequities. Organizations, such as the Boston Debate League (BDL), have explored ways in which critical consciousness can be fostered among boys of color. This work examines Resolved, an extracurricular program supported by BDL, which aims to empower Black and Latino boys through culturally-relevant, student-centered sessions. Drawing from classroom observations, student focus groups, and facilitator interviews, this phenomenological qualitative study explores program-specific components that contribute to student success and critical consciousness development. Long-term implications are discussed.
