Abstract

This study systematically analyzes the climate change strategies of world-class universities. Although recognized as key actors, their strategic priorities remain underexplored. Using McCowan's (2020) framework, this study analyzes climate-related documents from 30 world-class universities. Findings reveal a significant imbalance: efforts are predominantly focused on mitigation, channeled through campus operations. In contrast, adaptation is insufficient and largely confined to knowledge production, exposing a critical “adaptation gap.” A typology of university strategies is proposed, identifying three distinct models: “Operations-focused Mitigators,” “Research-led Adapters,” and “Balanced Actors.” The results offer a diagnostic tool for university leaders and validate the McCowan framework, highlighting the need for a more holistic approach.
