This replication study of Collet and Griener (2020) included two critical friends engaged in a Lesson Study to evaluate the responsiveness of the cultural iceberg theory (Peace Corps, n.d.). This lesson was part of a unit developed with Muhammad’s (2020) four-part equity framework that is describe in the text Cultivating Genius: An Equity Framework. The framework was chosen as it is aligned with responsive teaching practices. The results revealed that the use of critical friends allowed for the sharing of views about culture and created a strong lesson that was aligned to standards. Additionally, the findings suggest teachers can demonstrate responsive educational practices through facilitated conversations with emergent bilingual students.
