Fri, April 10, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Gold Level, Gold 3

Abstract

This ethnographic case study focuses on parent/ caregiver perceptions of their experiences engaging in translingual, creative, and multimodal arts-based literacy experiences with their children at a community center in a large urban city in the United States. The research question guiding this study is, How do parents and caregivers perceive their experiences and their children’s literacy engagement and development at the literacy center? As participant-observers in their role as literacy learning facilitators, the researchers will collect four forms of qualitative data: documents, interviews, observation, and artifacts, which will be analyzed inductively for emergent themes. Researchers believe findings will be used to make recommendations for collaborating with families to promote literacy development processes that center families’ histories, languages, and lived experiences.
