This paper explores how Catholic prelates (religious leaders) and school administrators throughout the South responded to the Brown decisions in Catholic parishes where the Catholic Church had opened segregated Black Catholic schools following Emancipation. Specifically, this paper explores how the prelates proceeded to enforce Brown and how their Black and White school communities, respectively, responded.
