This paper aimed to humanize parents and privilege their ways of caring for their children. This qualitative study of 90 families of children ages 0-5 expanded conventional notions of parent involvement. Our findings on parenting knowledge and attitudes showed that families rely on their elders and communities for wisdom, referral information, and ethnic knowledge on childrearing (vs. knowledge of systems and services) embedded in their collective commitments to children’s flourishing (vs. attachment that emphasizes the dyadic nature of mother-child relationships exclusively). For parenting practice, we showed how families are resourceful, innovative, and agentic in embedding basic care, play and enrichment, and family literacy in daily routines to support their children’s learning. Findings advance new directions for futuring equitable family-school-community partnerships.
