Abstract

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), has long been the standard for measuring college student engagement. However, HBCU student engagement may differ from NSSE indicators or high impact practices. Therefore, it may be necessary to measure some of the social, affective, cognitive/non-cognitive, emotional, pedagogical, etc. factors which may impact the positive engagement of HBCU students. The Historically Black College or University (HBCU) Student Engagement Measure (SEM) was developed in 2024 to examine the unique variables associated with how and why students maintain a connection to and maintain engagement with their HBCU. The purpose of this study was to examine the unique factors and contributory variables which may be associated with contributing to positive student engagement on HBCU campuses.
