A Framework of Online Discussions to Guide the Design, Development, and Facilitation of Online Learning

Abstract

As enrollments in fully online courses grow, concerns persist about the effectiveness of asynchronous learning, especially in fostering communication and interaction. In response to long-standing critiques and federal requirements for regular and substantive interaction (RSI), educators are exploring new ways to enhance online discussions. Advances in technology now allow for varied formats—text or video, asynchronous or synchronous—with different facilitation strategies. To support quality engagement, we developed an evidence-based, practitioner-friendly framework grounded in research to guide the design, facilitation, and assessment of online discussions. This session presents findings from our inquiry, introduces the framework, and explores implications for improving online teaching and learning, with a focus on enhancing the value of discussion for learners.
