AI in Higher Education Mental Health: A Systematic Review through the Digital Health Equity Lens

Sat, April 11, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree D

Abstract

This study examines the role of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in mental health support for higher education students, guided by the Digital Health Equity Framework (Crawford & Serhal, 2020). A systematic review of approximately 50 peer‑reviewed articles (2015–2025) was conducted using multiple databases, with studies analyzed through thematic analysis (Moher et al., 2009; Braun & Clarke, 2006). Findings highlight three domains: applications of AI for counseling and self‑assessment, usage patterns and adoption challenges, and ethical and equity considerations, including data privacy, cultural responsiveness, and accessibility. By situating results within the DHEF, this review underscores both opportunities and limitations of AI tools in addressing student well‑being, offering critical insights for equitable, ethical, and effective counseling practices in higher education.
