Recognizing and Responding to the Problematics of Secondary Social Studies

Fri, April 10, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Ground Floor, Gold 4

Abstract

Utilizing Rodríguez & Swalwell’s (2022) framework of problematic pitfalls, this paper examines the enduring nature of oppression within secondary social studies. Highlighting “normalization”, as maintained through ableism, Eurocentrism and settler colonialism, and religion, this paper demonstrates how an anti-oppressive approach challenges normalized narratives and fosters transformative and inclusive classrooms.
