Student engagement is a key predictor of academic success and closely linked to outcomes such as attendance and behavior. As understanding of engagement evolves, measurement tools must be grounded in strong theoretical frameworks. This study evaluates the student engagement domain of the MI Student Voice Perception Survey, which includes 12 items organized around five engagement accelerators. An alternative classification—reflecting emerging engagement understanding—was also tested. Using internal consistency metrics and confirmatory factor analyses, the study compares the psychometric strength and model fit of both specifications. Findings reveal stronger empirical support for the original model, highlighting limitations in retrofitting existing items to new frameworks. Recommendations are offered for developing theory-aligned survey items to improve the validity of engagement data for school improvement
