This paper responds to Dr. McDonald's chapter, The Future of the Field is Not Design, which provocatively argues that Learning/Instructional Design and Technology (L/IDT) should move beyond design as its defining paradigm. We counter that the field must instead embrace a more profound commitment to design expertise. Drawing on design theory and interdisciplinary literature, we argue that L/IDT’s future lies in advancing mature, ethical, and contextually grounded design practice. The future of the field, we contend, is design + X: Design Expertise.
