Preserving Historical Truth in an Era of Postmodern Academic Reconstruction

Abstract

Faculty teaching the history of American higher education in the current climate of shifting state and federal policies are faced with an ethical dilemma – to shy away from topics that may be perceived as politically difficult or find instructional strategies to sustain these critical conversations in authentic ways. Targeted approaches that center historical thinking alongside enhanced use of primary sources and other instructional strategies can maintain historical truths and present viable ways to teach topics facing heightened scrutiny in the current political climate.
