Exploring Roots of Place and Possibility: Rural Teacher Leaders' Journeys in an Online Community of Practice

Thu, April 9, 4:15 to 5:45pm PDT (4:15 to 5:45pm PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Gold Level, Gold 1

Abstract

Due to the importance of supporting teachers through professional development, teacher education would benefit from knowing more about how teachers mediate learning about their positionalities, practices, and “place in the world” (Yemini, Engel and Simon, 2023) and how this learning shapes their identities as teacher leaders. This paper offers a window into how teachers develop intentional leadership identities through an online graduate professional learning intensive. Contributions have implications as inequalities persist related to access to high-quality PD; however, through online communities of practice, educators develop greater networks of support for re-imagining themselves and their schools in new and dynamic ways.
