Abstract

In the present moment, we can observe a complex, viral pablum for education amidst digitalization and technology with artificial intelligence, standardization, and ideological debates about diversity, equity, and inclusion. This paper draws on a hermeneutic study of John Dewey’s American education philosophy developed during the industrial era with continental philosophy roots as informative for the present viral era. We consider Dewey’s writings and continental influences, Kant and Hegel, who considered education as necessary to be and become more human. We argue for the importance of these past insights from Dewey’s American education philosophy and theorizing to cultivate a present and future that is more educative in the best interests of pedagogy and learning for children, adults, and democratic living.
