Wed, April 8, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree D

Abstract

This study employed a two-dimensional quadrant analysis to develop a model of cultivation orientations in teacher leadership based on two dimensions: sources of influence (symbolic and human capital) and leadership functions (organizational management and professional development). Four types of teacher leadership orientations were identified: organizational management orientation based on symbolic capital, organizational management orientation based on human capital, Professional development orientation based on human capital, and professional development orientation based on symbolic capital. Characteristics of each type were illustrated through analysis of practice. Future research should empirically examine the effects of different orientations on student performance, and expand the framework by incorporating additional dimensions and leadership practices from the Global South to better understand the nature of teacher leadership.
