The Shifting Role Conceptualizations of the Superintendency

Thu, April 9, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Westin Bonaventure, Floor: Level 2, Mt. Washington

Abstract

The superintendency is a complex and dynamic role shaped by trends in education, policy shifts, and community need. In this study, we examine new superintendent survey data to learn how they view their leadership positions in relation to the multiple roles identified in previous leadership research. We find evidence that superintendents continue to be tasked with the responsibilities of earlier eras, though with more focused priorities on fiscal matters and communication. These roles are shaped by district context, with differences across urbanicity. Findings have implications for leader training, support, and resource allocation.
