Abstract

This mixed-methods study explores graduation outcomes among high school foster youth in a large urban Kansas district. Quantitative findings identified GPA, absenteeism, and at-risk indicators as significant predictors of graduation, while sex, race, and school mobility were not. Access to district transportation positively influenced graduation. Qualitative interviews revealed that youth viewed graduation as a symbol of resilience, hope, and transformation, while also expressing uncertainty about adulthood. Using Behavioral Momentum Theory, the study frames graduation as a reinforced process influenced by environmental stability and support. Findings align with AERA 2026’s theme by highlighting the need to construct educational momentum and possibilities for marginalized youth navigating disrupted trajectories.
