Futuring Black Male Administrators' Wholeness: Cultivating Principal Wellness and Transformative Leadership in K-12 Schools

Sat, April 11, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree D

Abstract

Black males are underrepresented in the principalship and are often leading in schools serving the most marginalized and vulnerable students, with little to no structured support for maintaining their personal and professional wellness. In the spirit of “futuring for education and educational leadership,” this symposium will center the experiences of Black male principals leading in K-12 urban schools, and how their participation in a yearlong principal wellness fellowship program enhanced their self-care practices and positively impacted their work as building administrators. This interactive session will foster dialogue among school principals, educators, and educational researchers as we explore culturally responsive professional development that supports Black male K-12 administrators in maintaining personal and professional wellness while leading in their schools.
