Collecting, Analyzing, and Reporting Storied Data: Articulating Multiple Narrative Research Approaches for Greater Methodological Transparency

Wed, April 8, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 515A

Abstract

While narrative inquiry has emerged as a vibrant methodological approach within language education research (Barkhuizen et al., 2024), scholars have identified ambiguities in how narrative methods have been employed and reported (Ghanbar et al., 2024). This paper responds to calls for greater methodological transparency among narrative inquiry in language education (Barkhuizen & Consoli, 2021) by illustrating three different approaches to narrative research from a study about language learning investment (Darvin & Norton, 2015). After briefly contextualizing the study, this presentation outlines multiple data collection and analysis procedures, illustrating each with relevant data excerpts. Based on the study’s findings, the presentation offers methodological implications. Attendees will gain familiarity with using narrative for collecting, analyzing, and reporting data in educational research.
