Does AI have a Place in Education: A Perfectionist Approach to EdTech Ethics

Sun, April 12, 11:45am to 1:15pm PDT (11:45am to 1:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 301B

Abstract

The proposed paper will argue that, despite the many well-intentioned efforts of researchers and educators to find ways to harness the affordances of AI for educative purposes, the endeavor is self-defeating owing to the probable negative effects on key human capacities that education is supposed to develop. This will be achieved by arguing that, whereas the capabilities that were atrophied by previous types of technology were characterized by “rote” activities (although, this requires some qualification), the capabilities that will be atrophied by AI are related to the very core of what makes us human and to the very purposes of education.
