Abstract

This meta-analysis synthesized 52 single-case experimental design studies to evaluate the effectiveness of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) interventions delivered through Apple’s iOS-based devices for individuals with complex communication needs, including those with intellectual and developmental disabilities and/or autism spectrum disorder. Using Bayesian three-level meta-analysis, we estimated both immediate intervention effects and linear time trend during the intervention phase, while accounting for variability across cases and studies. Results indicated a significant increase in communication outcomes, with sustained improvements over time. Moderator analyses indicate the effects of age, sex, and disability type, but also highlight the need to examine additional sources of heterogeneity. This study advances both empirical understanding and theoretical interpretation of modern AAC practices.
