An Ethos of Deserving: Reframing Black Women Collegians’ Educational Experiences

Abstract

This conceptual paper introduces an Ethos of Deserving (EoD), an alternative to belonging (Strayhorn, 2019). Based on patterns identified in a broader critical qualitative study (Author, 2024), EoD underscores the agency and (re)defined self-worth Black women collegians (BWC) are forced to enact, that are thwarted by predominantly white institutions (PWI), as they navigate unwelcoming environments, highlighting the necessity for systemic change.
