This paper will reexamine Black doctoral student socialization as a conduit to the professoriate, bridging historical exclusion with future-forward strategies. We build on socialization theory while incorporating contemporary scholarship to illuminate both enduring structural barriers and emerging innovations in doctoral training. In response to AERA’s 2026 theme, we argue that the socialization of Black doctoral students must be critically reimagined to ensure robust representation in the academic profession. Drawing from recent empirical studies and conceptual interventions, this work offers pathways to advance equity in the formation of future faculty through humanizing mentoring, community-embedded professional development, and counterstorytelling as strategy and method.
