Abstract

This study develops and validates the Asian American Ruist Values Scale (AARVS), a measure of adherence to Ruist (also known as Confucian) values among Asian Americans with roots in Ruism-influenced societies (AARRIS). While research often assumes AARRIS retain “Asian” or “Confucian” values, such claims are typically vague and untested. Drawing from New New Ruism, a systematic literature review of 27 studies informed eight dimensions: harmony, filial piety, collectivism, respect, shame, reticence, education, and humility. An initial item pool was piloted with university students, refined using reliability analyses, and prepared for factor analysis. By providing a validated tool, the AARVS will enable scholars to critically examine AARRIS adherence to Ruism and its educational implications.
