Abstract

The multidimensional collegiate experiences of Black/African American student-athletes have been widely examined at Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); however, their experiences at other Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) remain understudied. This phenomenological study explores the academic dimension of their college journey by examining the academic advising experiences of Division I Black/African American student-athletes enrolled at MSIs (excluding HBCUs). Guided by the frameworks of sense of belonging and servingness, the study uses semi-structured interviews to explore how advising practices shape their experiences. Findings will inform institutional policy and practice by identifying barriers to success, promoting culturally responsive advising, and encouraging inclusive structures that enhance academic support, student persistence, and equity within the MSI context.
