Critical Practices in Teaching Film Production: Faculty Experiences

Sun, April 12, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree Hall C

Abstract

Case studies of film production faculty explore how professors’ pedagogical approaches and positionality shape undergraduate film instruction. Film schools, often viewed as gateways to entertainment industry careers, tend to privilege mainstream Hollywood practices, reinforcing systemic inequities (Iyer, 2022; Romero Walker, 2022). Many production courses lack critical engagement with inclusion and representation, creating alienating environments for historically marginalized students. Although contemporary film theory and media education highlight social and cultural issues, production pedagogy continues to emphasize technical skills over critical perspectives (Romero Walker, 2021a). Understanding faculty experiences and the obstacles they face in designing inclusive curricula is essential to promoting equity in film education and industry access.
