Fri, April 10, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 303A

Abstract

Even as research on Asian American teachers has increased over the past few years, few studies examine the experiences of Asian American male teachers from a historical vantage point. Using AsianCrit in education as the guiding framework, the author employs historiography to illustrate the enduring stories of three trailblazing Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino American male teachers in U.S. K–12 public schools from the late 19th to the early 20th centuries. By situating the history of Asian American male teachers in the social context of education, this paper invites educational researchers to (re)member the solitude and endurance of past (and present) Asian American male teachers and construct new visions of research on male teachers of Color for coalition building and future making.
