Culture and Growth Mindset: Exploring the Mindset x Context Theory in Korean and American Students

Thu, April 9, 2:15 to 3:45pm PDT (2:15 to 3:45pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree Hall C

Abstract

Building on Mindset x Context theory and Hofstede's cultural orientation framework, this study examines how culturally informed interventions support mindset development by addressing cultural differences in the interpretation of failure, effort, and learning. Pre- and post-intervention survey data were collected from a five-day cross-cultural intervention conducted in South Korea involving 23 Korean and American elementary school students. Surveys included modified versions of the Growth Mindset Inventory (GMI) and the Cultural Values Scale (CVS), specifically on uncertainty avoidance and power distance. It is hypothesized that pre-growth mindset will be negatively associated with cultural orientation, these associations will weaken post-intervention, and cultural orientation will remain stable. Findings highlight the need for culturally responsive, context-sensitive approaches to mindset interventions.
