Abstract

This paper explores how integrating empathy into science education can humanize learning and sustain student engagement in inquiry cycles. Despite the growing emphasis on human-centered design in STEAM, research on empathy in science classrooms remains limited. Using a qualitative approach, this study investigates how students express empathy cognitively, affectively, and behaviorally while engaging in scientific problem-solving. Findings suggest that fostering awareness of others’ perspectives enhances motivation, collaboration, and critical thinking, providing a bridge between emotional understanding and scientific inquiry. Implications highlight strategies for teachers to embed empathy-driven practices, design inclusive learning experiences, and support diverse learners. By centering empathy, educators can create environments where students meaningfully connect with scientific content and each other.
