Lessons in Leadership:  What My Grandmother and Othermothers Taught Me

Wed, April 8, 11:45am to 1:15pm PDT (11:45am to 1:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 303A

Abstract

Dr. Marcelle Haddix will share lessons learned on her leadership journey from being a teacher educator and leading literacy scholar to now serving as the first Black woman dean of a highly ranked school of education.  She will present the guiding principles she learned from her grandmother, a pioneer in early childhood education, and other Black woman leaders.  She will provide a framework for leadership rooted in Black feminisms and womanist theories and encourage dialogue that will provide historical contexts, address current issues, and answer the questions:  What leadership is needed to address pressing issues in education today?  What leadership will insure and sustain equitable and transformative outcomes in education in the future?
