The Impacts of Virginia’s African American History and Studies Courses on African American Students" research project addresses the evolution of African American History and African American Studies in K-12 schools and the responsive resistance to it throughout Virginia's history. This research will investigate the potential benefits of integrating African American History and African American Studies courses into the curriculum, with a focus on enhancing student experiences. The research will reveal the benefits of culturally responsive instruction on students’ academic success, socioemotional development, identity formation, and relationships with their peers. The study will also address the potential impacts of resistance to the courses on students’ academic engagement, cultural identity development, and access to equitable educational opportunities for African American students.
