Abstract

Morale among students and instructors in general education courses within higher education are identified as a significant factor shaping teaching effectiveness, student engagement, and departmental stability. This study uses Hardy’s (2009) dimensions of morale (affect, goals, and interpersonal relationships) to better understand the dynamics of morale in higher education classrooms. Mixed methods, via embedded design and survey research, will be used to integrate quantitative and qualitative data to generate a comprehensive picture of classroom morale. Data from instructor and student surveys will be collected through a Likert-scale survey adapted from Hardy’s morale instrument, measuring both student and instructor perspectives. In addition, qualitative data will be gathered through open-ended survey questions that explore factors influencing morale inside and outside the classroom.
