Globalization has reshaped higher education by intensifying competition and redefining research excellence through global publication metrics. This conceptual paper examines how these pressures influence research publication practices and academic identity in Indonesian higher education institutions. Drawing on the theory of academic capitalism, the study interprets how market-oriented logics shape institutional policies, incentive structures, and scholarly behaviors, creating tension between global visibility and local relevance. Preliminary findings suggest that while globalization fosters international collaboration, it also reinforces inequalities through linguistic barriers, market-driven incentives, and the undervaluation of local knowledge. The paper highlights the need for context-sensitive strategies that strengthen Indonesia’s research ecosystem while supporting equitable and culturally grounded knowledge production.
