Are Branch Campuses a Dead End? Examining Degree Completion at Rural Branch Campuses and Centers

Fri, April 10, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree Hall C

Abstract

Community college branch campuses and centers are often the most accessible postsecondary option for rural students, yet little is known about whether these locations provide complete pathway options. Drawing on resource allocation theory, this study examines the extent to which rural students can fully complete certificate and associate’s degree requirements at rural community college branch campuses and centers in Florida. Our analysis incorporates course schedules, program requirements, and spatial data to determine the availability of courses across campuses. Findings are expected to reveal significant disparities in program completeness, particularly at smaller and more remote campuses. This research advances understanding of barriers faced by rural students and contributes to efforts aimed at improving educational access and degree attainment in rural communities.
